BIMD 1411 General Biology I with Laboratory In General Biology I, students will study the organization and function of unicellular and multicellular organisms, primarily focusing on the processes that keep them alive and reproducing. It is one of two introductory biology courses required for Biology majors and minors and is the first core course in the biology sequence. Combined with General Biology II (see next course), which could precede or follow this course, it completes a year-long introductory biology. The course is an introduction to biology at the molecular, cellular, and organismal level and topics include scientific skills, biological chemistry, cell structure and function, metabolism, cell division, molecular genetics, diversity, anatomy, and physiology.
BIMD 1412 General Biology II with Laboratory This course is an introduction to Biology at the level of populations and communities. It is second introductory biology course in the biology sequence required for Biology majors and minors. It completes a year-long introductory biology sequence. The aim of this survey course is to impart a broad introductory knowledge and understanding of species concepts, systematics, macro evolutionary processes such as extinction, transmission genetics, the origins and maintenance of genetic variation, natural selection and adaptation, other evolutionary processes including genetic drift, population biology and community ecology, worldwide biogeography, biomes, and biodiversity, biogeochemical cycles, conservation biology, the scientific method, and issues associated with extinction. The other goal of this class is to teach certain mathematical skills and reasoning associated with ecology and evolutionary biology, such as experimental design, the crafting of scientific figures, the reading of scientific literature, measurement, and simple methods of statistical analysis.
CHMD 1511 General Chemistry I with Laboratory This course is a first-semester course in general chemistry and is designed to meet the need for a general chemistry requirement for several different programs. Topics covered include the quantum model of the atom, stoichiometry, periodicity, reaction types, intermolecular forces, and ph.
CHMD 1512 General Chemistry II with Laboratory This course in general chemistry is designed to meet the needs of a second-semester general chemistry course for several different programs. It covers topics such as thermochemistry, spontaneity, chemical equilibrium, acid-base equilibrium, electrochemistry, kinetics, bonding, order/symmetry in condensed phases, coordination compounds, and spectroscopy.
PMMD 1411 Algebra This course covers functions, composition and inverses; graphs and transformations, polynomial and rational functions, exponential functions, logarithms and applications; circles and introduction to trigonometry.
STMD 1411 Introduction to Statistics This course focuses on basic statistical concepts and methods, applications of statistics in the real world, displaying and describing data, normal curve, regression, probability, statistical inference, confidence intervals and hypothesis tests.
SBSC 1311 Social and Behavioral Sciences: Psychology This course is a general introduction to psychology, designed to expose students to the basic concepts and topics of psychology such as introduction to the nervous system, perception, motivation, learning and memory, social behavior, personality, developmental and clinical psychology. A broad range of subjects is sampled. Students will be introduced to theories, principles and research findings in psychological phenomena such as human cognition, emotion, personality and social influences. Notes to Students: Students under 18 years of age need parental consent to participate in research experiments that are part of the course. Instructions for obtaining parental consent will be provided during class early in the semester.
SBSC 1312 Social and Behavioral Sciences: Communication The main goal of this course is to introduce students to central concepts in Communications and provide them with an overview of the field of communication research. The first half of the course covers the various areas of communication, theories, concepts, notable research, and application to everyday life. The second half of the course introduces students to experts in communication. This part of the course will get students acquainted with the specific research the Professors conduct, the areas of research and teaching they cover, and their perspectives on communication studies.

CHMD 2521 Organic Chemistry I with Laboratory This is a standard college level first course in Organic Chemistry. Organic Chemistry I is the first semester of a one-year course sequence. Lecture component: Students will learn the theories and principles of isolation, purification, characterization, and compositional analysis of organic molecules through techniques such as thin-layer and column chromatography, gas chromatography, infrared spectroscopy, melting point, and distillation. Laboratory component: This is the laboratory component of Organic Chemistry I which is taken concurrently with Organic Chemistry I. It is an introductory organic chemistry laboratory that covers basic techniques (distillation, crystallization, chromatography, MP and BP), reactions (substitution, elimination, Diels-alder, oxidation-reduction), instrumentation (gas and liquid chromatography, IR).
CHMD 2622 Organic Chemistry II with Laboratory This course is a continuation of Organic Chemistry I, which provides the foundation for Organic Chemistry II. Lecture component: This second course in the year-long sequence introduces structure-function relationships with an emphasis on the chemistry of organic compounds and related spectroscopic techniques. Laboratory component: This course follows Organic Chemistry II and is the laboratory component of Organic Chemistry II. This advanced organic chemistry laboratory covers topics including synthesis, stereochemistry, spectrometry (IR, NMR), organic analytical chemistry (TLC, HPLC), and microscale techniques.
BCHM 2311 Introductory Biochemistry The course is an introduction to biochemistry and covers the following topics: structure and function of cellular constituents; enzymology; metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids, nucleotides; molecular biology of biosynthesis of proteins and nucleic acids.
BIMD 2511 One Advanced-Level Biology: General Microbiology or Genetics General Microbiology: The overall objective for the course is to expose students to advanced concepts and principles of current microbiology, microbial ecology, and genomics. This course covers topics such as an introduction to the morphology, staining, genetics, physiology and biochemistry of microbial life; medical significance of bacteria, archaea, fungi, protozoa, algae and helminthes; and the significance of viruses, prions, and viroids. Genetics: This course covers the principles of genetics, gene and chromosome structure, gene expression, inheritance of complex traits, Mendelian and non-Mendelian inheritance, genomes, and genetic engineering. Laboratory exercises are designed to give students hands-on experience on genetic research.
SBSC 2311 Social and Behavioral Sciences: Sociology Sociology is the scientific study of society and social interaction, and their effects on individual and group behavior. This basic introductory sociology course will provide an introduction to the concepts, theories, and methods used by sociologists to study social life and the analysis of human societies, organizations and groups, and the interrelations among individuals, groups, and societies. Special attention is given to how the sociological perspective can enhance our ability to understand society and to function within it. The course will take account of how gender, race, ethnicity, and social class impact people's lives, and devote a fair portion of time looking at the role of inequalities across these categories, from several theoretical perspectives. It will also consider how social forces and social structures impact the everyday experiences of people. After taking this course, students should understand the sociological perspective and the tools to comprehend the connection between the events of students' own life and the social world around them.
CMED 2111 Community Medicine (Longitudinal Years 1&2) This longitudinal course provides students with early clinical exposure at the start of the medical program in Year 1. The information students learn in the classroom is integrated throughout the community-based clinical experience. Students get the unique opportunity to become part of a medical team as well as gain a greater understanding of the roles of patient care professionals and the hospital community as a team caring for the patient. In this course, students will meet twice a month where they will spend once a month learning in the classroom and once a month in the community which will provide early insight into basic doctoring skills such as daily patient intake, health checkups, and screening activities. Course components include community based clinical experiences, interactive large group seminars, and small group sessions for reflection of clinical sessions. Through the opportunity to engage in the community, students will feel what is like to empower the community and becoming an integral part of it. This course enables students to get clinical exposure from Day 1 incorporating knowledge of societal issues and community resources and understanding the importance of self-learning through the classroom and hands-on approaches.
MEDP 2221 Medicine as a Profession (Longitudinal Years 1&2) The goal of this longitudinal course is to introduce students to the scope of the profession of medicine, its history, and its evolving role in society. There are 4 mini discussion sections of the course designed to explore important components of the profession as students transition to the upper-level years of the medical program. The four sequential discussion topics are: The Scope of Medicine; The Evolution of Medicine; Medicine, Society and Health Policy; The Art and Science of Medicine. Courses are developed and updated by medical school faculty and the curriculum is reviewed and revised annually. At the end of the course, students will complete a thesis project where they will integrate course topics and reflect on what they learned in the course. This student-proposed project will require faculty approval and is intended to provide students with an individualized learning experience to satisfy curiosity of the intellect and connect more deeply with a faculty supervisor.

BSHM 3511 Block 1: Body Systems & Homeostasis 1 Block 1 is the first introduction to the patient and the healthcare system in the context of routine health maintenance and wellness. During this block, students will begin to learn about the roles and responsibilities of various members of the healthcare team. Students will be introduced to the basics of the normal structure and function of the human body, including how clinicians monitor health status using vital signs, general appearance, and laboratory tests. Students will learn the core concepts of the foundational sciences of medicine – genetics, biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, embryology, cell biology, physiology, pharmacology, evidence-based medicine – and how they relate to normal processes in the body. This core will provide the building blocks to distinguish abnormal from normal, and to understand the basis for diagnostic testing and pharmacologic interventions. Students will also learn the basics of epidemiology and biostatistics to support effective clinical practice and interpretation of the scientific literature.
PATH 3611 Block 2: Pathogenesis The Pathogenesis Block is devoted to beginning the lifelong pursuit of understanding the etiology behind disease formation and progression and the current ways to stabilize, mitigate, or even reverse the disease process using Pharmacological and Non-pharmacological interventions. Students will gain a deeper appreciation for are those associated with imbalance of Energy Homeostasis – Diabetes, microbiological infections; inflammation and other responses to disease; over/under stimulation of the immune system; Autoimmunity and acquired immune disorders; neoplasia; anemia, and abnormal Hematopoietic and lymphoreticular system responses. Also, complementary aspects of patient care will be highlighted so that students may holistically treat your patient, give any palliative care they and their family may need, and be able to sustain a viable and fruitful practice. As an aside, students will also learn ways to support their own well-being, nurture their identity as a physician and a human, and bond with the community that they serve. Each week will have 1-3 cases that will synthesize the course content taught in labs, lectures, flipped classroom format, and independent study for the week and place the material in a clinical context to facilitate comprehension.
MSKS 3512 Block 3: Skin, Muscle & Movement Skin, Muscle & Movement is the first of five block courses that is organized in an organ system approach. Gross anatomy lab begins in this block and will extend through Block 7. This sequence is in part oriented toward the logistics of the approach to the cadaver (e.g., starting in this block with skin and muscular systems). The content will include study of skin, muscle and bone anatomy and physiology and include exploration of orthopedic and rheumatologic issues, physical disability, and issues in health care such as pain management and appropriate use of testing and surgical intervention in conditions such as joint injury.
CRSP 3711 Block 4: Circulation & Respiration The Circulation and Respiration Block begins to explore fundamental physiologic and pharmacologic concepts in homeostasis and introduces the student to some of the most common and significant health issues such as coronary disease, asthma and chronic lung disease. Many concepts in test utility, epidemiology, health systems, and health equity are also incorporated into this block. Course content includes fundamental physiologic and pharmacologic concepts in homeostasis, introduction to common and significant health issues: coronary disease, asthma and chronic lung disease, and concepts in test utility, epidemiology, health systems, and health equity.
DGHM 3511 Block 5: Digestion & Homeostasis 2 The Digestion and Homeostasis II block along with study of the GI and renal systems, begins to explore hormonal physiology, particularly the exocrine aspects related to GI function and endocrine issues such as diabetes and adrenal function. A number of health delivery systems and health equity issues surround the study of diabetes and of chronic kidney disease and dialysis. This block also provides many opportunities to return to the study of biochemistry and nutrition.

The course will cover basic anatomy and physiology of the central and peripheral nervous systems, their normal structure and function, how alternations in these or in combination with environmental factors can give rise to neurological and psychiatric disorders. Treatment options, mechanisms, and selection considerations are also presented. REPR 4411 Block 7: Regulation & Reproduction This Block of the curriculum concerns the function of the endocrine and reproductive organ systems, including the end organs themselves and the factors that regulate their activity. Normal organ structure and function will be discussed, leading to a description of the pathology and pathophysiology of disease conditions, and ultimately to identification of therapeutic approaches.
SYNT 4141 Block 8: Synthesis (Longitudinal Years 3 & 4) Synthesis is a longitudinal block throughout Years 3 and 4 consisting of one-week intersessions following each Block where they link together with the longer, summative period of Block 8 (6 weeks), to form a course focusing on the cumulative nature of students' learning and the longitudinal trajectory of their professional development. In each of these course segments, students will have an interval where they are not continually responsible for "new" material but can reflect on their learning to date, consolidate and integrate their knowledge, and plan their approach to learning going forward. Class sessions will focus on cases that illustrate the interdependence of the organ systems studied to date and the management of complex, multi-system disease. The five themes: Foundational Knowledge, Clinical Practice, Health Illness and Society (HIS), Professional Development (PD) and Health Care Systems (HCS) are integrated in a myriad of activities. The Professional Development Theme will be prominent in this course, with mentored small-group sessions addressing issues in professional identity formation, wellness and resilience, career discernment, and preparation for residency.
CLRK 4111 Block 9: Transition to Clerkship (Part 1 of Clinical Connections & Competencies) The overall goal of the Transition to Clerkship block (TTC) is to provide an orientation and overview of the clerkships, along with the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to be successful in the clinical clerkships and electives. This course also sets the stage for the longitudinal Clinical Connections and Competencies course in Year 5 of the College of Medicine curriculum. Clinical clerkships and electives focus on experiential learning where students are a part of the healthcare team providing patient care. Given the complexities of the healthcare systems, students will be expected to participate in various educational modules that provide an introduction to the various topics such as credentialing, patient safety, and occupational exposure. These opportunities will help ease the transition into the first clinical clerkship experience. Program directors expect their incoming interns to be prepared to take care of patients effectively and efficiently Day 1 of residency so in this course, students will be introduced to Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) and provided an overview of how they will continue to build their skills over the course of Years 5 and 6. EPAs are guidelines established by the AAMC for medical schools in the US. The EPAs provide a framework used to guide the development of skills and competencies that all medical students should be able to perform upon entering residency.
DCTR 4151 Doctoring and Clinical Skills (Longitudinal Years 3 and 4) Doctoring and Clinical Skills 1 (DoCS 1) Year 3: DoCS 1 is the primary vehicle for the Clinical Practice theme and students' introduction to the care of patients. The course will combine classroom exercises and discussion in small groups, skills practice with patient-instructors and with each other, clinical simulation-based exercises for instruction and assessment, in-hospital practice of the complete history and physical examination, and office-based primary care experience in working with patients. The primary purpose of the DoCS (Doctoring and Clinical Skills) course is to ensure students acquire the core knowledge and skills that are essential before entering the clinical clerkship years. DoCS 2 Year 4: A continuation of the Essentials of Clinical Medicine (ECM) clinical skills sequence, Year 4 builds on the interviewing skills acquired in the Year 3 course and is designed to provide comprehensive preparation for clerkships and subsequent clinical activities. Students learn fundamental skills used in taking a history, performing a physical examination, relating to the patient, clinical reasoning, and recording findings in the patient record. The course also provides the first concentrated exposure to the clinical activities of physicians and to the structure and function of health care facilities (hospitals and clinics) as well as an expanded experience with an outpatient preceptor.
MDCL 4411 Medical Colloquia (Longitudinal Years 3 & 4) This course will provide a platform to explore issues not easily integrated into the content of the general medical school curriculum. Topics will span all five content themes: Professional Development, Health, Illness and Society, Foundational Knowledge, Health Care Systems and Clinical Practice of Medicine. The course is designed to emulate the accepted practices of Continuing Medical Education (CME) in the United States and introduce students to habits of self-directed and self-regulated learning that will ensure effective utilization of CME opportunities throughout their career. There will be ten scheduled sessions per term throughout Years 3 and 4; each student is required to attend a minimum of six of these sessions to receive credit and pass the course, though it is encouraged that students attend all ten sessions. To facilitate scheduling and planning for the term as a whole and to ensure students' access to the required number of sessions, each student will be assigned specific dates at the outset of the term. Each session will offer a menu of several different presentations, with a summary of each presentation distributed the week before the session. At the beginning of the week of their assigned Colloquia date, students will receive a sign-up sheet; sign up is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Students may attend a presentation of particular interest to them on a day that is not one of their scheduled sessions, provided there is capacity. However, they will not receive credit for this session as part of their six out of ten required sessions.
SSMB 4011 Block 0 (Optional Self-Study Modules) The purpose of Block 0 is to prepare students and ensure their success in the blocks in Years 3 & 4. Block 0 consists of 9 online self-study modules to help students prepare for the blocks. The modules review basic concepts in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell and tissue biology, and medical genetics. These concepts should be familiar from the course work in Years 1 & 2 that provide students with a good foundation for mastering more advanced scientific concepts in the subsequent block courses. These materials should be particularly useful for students transferring into the program at the Year 3 level.

FMED 5411 Family Medicine The Family Medicine clerkship is a required primary care ambulatory rotation. The clerkship teaches the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to provide continuing, comprehensive and preventive care to individuals and families who represent a broad spectrum of ages and cultures in the outpatient setting. Topics that this course will cover include but are not limited to family practice, ambulatory care, primary care, continuing, comprehensive and preventive care, care of individuals in the context of the family, care of the family as a unit, biopsychosocial approach, patient-centered medicine, culturally competent care, doctor-patient relationship.
IMED 5811 Internal Medicine The Internal Medicine clerkship is designed to expose students to the comprehensive approach to adult patients with nonsurgical disease. The emphasis is on perfecting the fundamental skills of data collection, clinical reasoning, and understanding of pathophysiological process. The experience is patient-centered, supplemented with didactic presentations and student readings appropriate to the care of their own patients. In their first exposure to Internal Medicine as a discipline, students simulate the role of a trained internist under the close supervision of resident trainees and faculty members.
SURG 5121 Surgery The General Surgery Clerkship is designed to be an introduction to Surgery and selected surgical subspecialties. Students are assigned to the inpatient surgical wards and clinics. The students are taught the approach to the surgical patient and participate in pre- and postoperative care as well as perform certain invasive techniques safely. By the end of rotation, students are expected to know the indications and the contradictions and the role of ancillary services in managing surgical diseases.
PEDI 5811 Pediatrics The Pediatrics Clerkship provides extensive clinical experience with diseases of infants, children, and adolescents, as well as with normal infants and children. Patients are seen in a variety of clinical settings, including the newborn nursery, the pediatrics inpatient units, and a variety of outpatient settings as well as in the emergency room. Normal processes of growth and development are emphasized, and diseases are approached within this frame of reference. The student will develop basic skills in the evaluation and management of infants and children, and will gain an understanding of the attitudes and approaches of pediatric medicine that are intended to foster optimal physical and psychosocial development of the child.
PSCH 5811 Psychiatry In the core Psychiatry Clerkship, students learn how to understand, diagnose and treat patients with psychiatric disorders. They are trained to conduct diagnostic interviews and perform comprehensive mental status examinations. They learn to work with multidisciplinary teams to provide psychiatric treatment in inpatient, consult/liaison, outpatient and emergency room settings, and to use a biopsychosocial framework to understand psychiatric illness. Topics covered in this course include but are not limited to mental status examination, psychiatric interview, biopsychosocial framework, psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, electroconvulsive therapy, mood disorders, psychotic disorders, organic mental disorders, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, somatoform disorders, childhood psychiatric disorders.
OBGN 5811 Obstetrics & Gynecology The overall objective of the Clerkship in Obstetrics and Gynecology is that students acquire and apply the basic information and master the basic skills needed by all physicians who provide care for women. Further, students will be exposed to a variety of patients with obstetric and gynecologic problems, including normal and high-risk pregnancies, pregnancy wastage and infertility, gynecologic endocrine abnormalities, infections, psychosomatic, and neoplastic problems. Students will also encounter patients who desire contraceptive advice or have problems in the psychosexual sphere. Students spend three weeks on synecology ambulatory and surgical services, evaluating patients in general gynecology, gynecologic oncology, family planning, and endocrine clinics. During the three weeks on the obstetrical services, students rotate on prenatal clinics, labor and delivery, and antepartum/postpartum wards. These are subject to change as the clerkship is revised; also, there may be some site variations.
NEUR 5411 Neurology This course is designed to provide a 4-week clinical experience in basic Neurology where the standardized curriculum provides students with the knowledge and skills in clinical neurology that are essential for future non-neurologists, i.e., the core competencies. Students will learn how to care for patients with neurologic disease and it is important that they demonstrate conscientious and responsible behavior while caring for patients during this elective. The neurology elective consists of two major components: the inpatient and outpatient experiences. Students should be at their clinical sites on time and should dress professionally for all elective activities and wear a white lab coat with appropriate identification displayed while participating in ward and clinic activities.
CLNC 5011 Clinical Intersections (Part 2 of Clinical Connections and Competencies) Clinical Intersections is the second component of Clinical Connections and Competencies and occurs during Year 5. Clinical Intersections occurs longitudinally, spanning all of Year 5, occurring in 4 encounters and culminating in the Graduation Competency Exam. Each encounter lasts 1 day and includes things that students wouldn't otherwise be exposed to during a clerkship, such as going to the simulation center and working on mannequins, using Task trainers to learn procedures such as catheterization, understanding patient handoff, medical records, and patient safety. The goal of Clinical Intersections is to reinforce clinical knowledge and skills in parallel with core clinical experiences of the clinical clerkships. Clinical Intersections includes online preparatory assignments, procedural skills practice, and discussion-based active learning sessions to develop students' skills, knowledge, and clinical confidence. This course builds upon the foundation established in Doctoring and Clinical Skills and the Transition to Clerkship (TTC) courses by reinforcing clinical competency as well as social and cognitive skills. Clinical Intersections continues the education of students in the Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) for entering residency. As mentioned in the syllabus document for Years 3 & 4 under Block IX: Transition to Clerkship, the EPAs provide a framework used to guide the development of skills and competencies that all medical students should be able to perform upon entering residency.

SURG 6411 Advanced Surgery The surgery rotation is designed to provide students with the essential cognitive, behavioral and procedural skills to prepare them for their future role as a trusted, competent and safe intern. The surgery rotation is an essential prerequisite for students pursuing procedure-related residency programs, in fact, it is also extremely valuable for all graduating students regardless of the specialty they choose to pursue for future training. During the surgery rotation, students are expected to change their frame of reference from being a recipient of knowledge as a student, to become a provider of care to actual patients. Students will be immersed in the daily activities as an integral member of the care team and not a mere observer of the team's activities. Students will be entrusted to perform defined patient-centered tasks with escalating degrees of autonomy. The goal is that students reach a stage where clinicians can trust that they can perform these tasks competently, consistently, and with integrity.

IMED 6411 Advanced Internal Medicine The advanced internal medicine clerkship represents, in part, a continuation of the basic Year 5 internal medicine clerkship. It will provide Year 6 students with an educational experience that offers graduates supervised responsibility for patient care in the area of general internal medicine. During this clerkship, each student will gain an awareness of the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes that internists strive to acquire and maintain throughout their professional lives. OBGN 6411 Advanced Obstetrics & Gynecology Obstetrics and Gynecology is a specialty that focuses on comprehensive medical care (diagnosis, treatment, and prevention) for female patients across the lifespan. This elective is meant to build on the knowledge and experience gained during Year 5 and help those students interested in obstetrics and gynecology gain the necessary knowledge base and skills to succeed in their intern year. On this rotation, the learner will work closely with residents and faculty to develop and implement management plans for patients presenting in a variety of clinical settings including both inpatient and outpatient. The primary focus is on clinical experience and acquisition of basic procedural skills. Students are also expected to demonstrate that they are able to perform critical appraisal of the literature on a topic of their choosing.

ELEM 6411 Advanced Emergency Medicine The Advanced Emergency Medicine rotation is designed to expose students to the concepts and skills involved in Emergency Medicine practice and provide in depth knowledge to students interested in the specialty as a career path. Students will learn how Emergency Medicine care interfaces with other medical specialties, hone skills as the initial provider caring for a diverse spectrum of patients, assess, and determine treatment. Students will also interpret testing and make patient dispositions in a time-constrained setting. Students will be expected to manage their own patients within the limits of the Emergency Department (ED) setting with oversight by Emergency Medicine attendings and senior residents.

FMED 6411 Advanced Family Medicine The four-week experience in Family Medicine will provide an educational experience for Year 6 students that offers graduates supervised responsibility for inpatient care in the area of Family Medicine. This rotation will allow students to synthesize knowledge and skills learned in the Year 5 clerkship, and gain an awareness of the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes that doctors that practice Family Medicine strive to acquire and maintain throughout their professional lives. TRES 6211 Transition to Residency Transition to Residency is the third component of the longitudinal Clinical Competencies and Connections course and is designed to prepare the graduating medical student for residency. The goal of Transition to Residency is to provide students opportunities to learn the final competencies required to make the successful transition to their intern year. The course is a culmination of the six years of medical school and is designed to engage students in integrating and expanding upon foundational knowledge and clinical skills learned as they prepare for the next phase of their career.
