Course Catalog
MSID 5301: Evidence-Based Design and Research Methodologies 3(3,0)
This course is an introduction to the theory and practice of evidence-based interior design including literature reviews, best practices, and data collection and analysis. Includes examination of common research methods used in evidence-based interior design and evaluation of published research studies. Some forms of statistical analysis are covered. Significant research in interior design is explored through readings and individual or team empirical research projects and writings.
MSID 5302: Design for Special Populations and Environments 3(3,0)
Every human is an individual who has different needs for how to interact with the environment. Where each person is an individual, different interior environments also require individual treatment. Students will identify, review and research existing peer reviewed journal articles for specific design problems, resolutions and applications for populations such as infants, children, the elderly, people with disabilities, specialized cultural requirements, etc., and how to design interior environments that meet their needs. In addition, this course will analyze the special design needs and interior requirements of unique interior environments. Research will comprise both commercial and residential design as it relates to the particular environment or populations and the health, safety and well-being of its occupants.
MSID 5303: Environmental Psychology 3(3,0)
Human behavior and use of interior environments is based on human physical, cultural and psychological traits. This course is an in-depth study of the various factors that influence how humans interface with interior environments and are considered to be intrinsic to the development and maintenance of a sense of self and identity as well as social practices of individuals and groups. Topics include major theoretical perspectives, spatial perception and cognition, personal space, territoriality, place attachment, design, culture etc. The course will focus on essential human environments such as homes, neighborhoods, commercial and public spaces. The research methods used in Environmental Psychology research will be explored and analyzed.
MSID 5304: Healthcare Design Seminar 3(3,0)
This course examines, using evidence-based research and current published studies, the specialized application of principles and processes of healthcare design, including how the environment can support healing and promote well-being. Explores and analyzes interior technological and building code issues for specialized health-based facilities through design projects and/or research reports. It also will prepare students for EDAC certification.
MSID 5305: Sustainable Design Seminar 3(3,0)
This course provides a theoretical exploration of the sustainable design movement; its history and background; and the social, cultural, and economic issues surrounding its current momentum. International environmentally responsible design, universal design, international building codes, environmental assessment tools, and sustainable design rating systems are explored and applied. Students select projects based on area of interest to be researched and analyzed.
MSID 5306: Illumination and Acoustical Design Seminar 3(3,0)
This course explores advanced topics in the concepts and principles of illumination and acoustics, including artificial, natural and sustainable sources. Topics will include the physical, physiological, and psychological principles of visual and auditory perception and visual and acoustic comfort in the built environment. Students will investigate research, guidelines and applications in lighting and acoustical techniques that positively affect human health, safety and well-being in the built environment.
MSID 6301: Guided Individual Readings and Research 3(3,0)
This course covers in-depth the initial stages of a research document: topic identification, research and review of pertinent literature. According to their individualized topics, students will complete literature review and proposal for their written thesis, or research and proposal for their comprehensive studio project.
MSID 6302: Advanced Design Graphics 3(1,4)
This studio-based course introduces or expands student learning in advanced design graphics such as BIM programs, 3D printing, advanced Photoshop techniques, advanced 3DS Max techniques, virtual reality methods as well as other new and developing design and presentation techniques.
MSID 6303: Special Topics in Interior Design 3(3,0)
This course will have no set topics but will change depending on cohort class needs, visiting instructors, or current issues in design. It will focus on new and developing information in Interior Design. It could include new research, techniques, technology, materials, teaching strategies, etc. that would bring advanced knowledge to students. It could also take the form of a seminar where students develop and present relevant topics.
MSID 6305: Practicum 3
This practicum provides professional opportunities relevant to student need. It can involve professional practice in a student’s preferred design emphasis, or teaching under the direction of a university instructor to gain classroom teaching experience. Requirement: approval of graduate program director.
MSID 6306 Graduate Directed Research 3
This course is for individual investigation into and analysis of specific aspects within the discipline of Interior Design. Under faculty supervision, students develop a written project and presentation focusing on an area of interest or design specialization in which the department does not offer coursework or in which the student seeks further development. Prerequisite: approval of graduate program director.
MSID 6699: Thesis 6
Students will individually research and write Master’s thesis guided by faculty.
