  • Webinar Series: Invited Speaker at Faculty Forum in Professional Development Center, College of Engineering, Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University (PMU)

Dr. Saidur Chowdhury, Assistant Professor of the Civil Engineering Department was presented a technical paper held on October 25, 2021 at 06:00 PM at PMU. The title was ‘recycling waste products for toxic metal removals from water and wastewater.

Abstract: Different municipal, agricultural, and industrial waste products have been investigated to treat water and wastewater. Recycling smelter slag is one of the waste products that can be recycled as a reactive absorbent to treat water and wastewater. There are environmental and economic benefits to using slag as a recycling or a renewable resource rather than waste products. It can be used in situ (e.g. permeable reactive barrier, injection method, wetland and Oxidation) and ex situ (e.g. filter bed, suspended batch reactor or continuous reactor system, Oxidation and precipitation, and car-bon sequestration etc.) treatment. The study helps explore the scope using recycling materials in the gulf region that can eliminate the industrial waste disposal cost. It also improves the efficiency of treatment of metal-contaminated water and wastewater as well as the operational performance.
  • Webinar Series: Invited Speaker at Sustainable Water Research Group (SWRG) in the department of Civil Engineering at Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University (PMU)

Engr. Nabil Hijazi, a Principle Consultant with focus on Circular Economy, invited to speak about Circular Economy and Sustainability. The webinar was held on September 3, 2021 at Sustainable Water Center (SWC) in the department of Civil Engineering at PMU.

Abstract: The circular economy represents a radical departure from the linear, “take, make, waste” production and consumption models and instead decouples growth from the use of natural resources and environmental impact. In 2016, Saudi Arabia launched its ‘Vision 2030’, an ambitious roadmap for a diverse, thriving, and sustainable nation. Transitioning to a circular economy will help Saudi Arabia address waste mismanagement, and help create a more resilient economic model, not solely dependent on the oil sector. The presentation will present the circular economy concept, with elaboration on asphalt rubber pavement and plastics.
