Master in Future Studies

Executive Summary: Master’s Degree in Futures Studies

The growing importance of Futures Studies as a field and a practice has grown substantially over the past few decades both in terms of its reach and expansiveness of the approaches, tools, techniques, and their application across all disciplines. As the world faces a multiplicity of crises and exacerbated inequalities, learning to better navigate uncertainty and identify innovative solutions to complex challenges through futures literacy is a crucial skill of the 21st Century.

As Futures Studies is an inherently interdisciplinary field, it can be approached from any academic background or set of work experiences. Therefore, an undergraduate degree in Futures Studies is not required for participation in this MSc programme. Indeed, the skills and knowledge to be acquired during this degree is applicable to all areas of specialisation. The MSc in Futures Studies will equip students with a broad understanding of human anticipatory systems, futures concepts and applications that can be applied in academic, public and private sector contexts and functions. It aims to enhance learners’ foresight, systems and design thinking capacities as capabilities that move beyond knowledge retention and instead, towards anticipating and conceptualizing provident responses to contemporary issues, current and emerging.

This programme invites studies to explore innovative methodologies and technologies required for implementing studies of the future. Alongside guest lectures, industry visits, student colloquia, and group assignments, this degree will support learners to produce a defensible and compelling ‘futures assessment’ on a topic relevant to their chosen field of study or personal interest. With a multi-disciplinary practice-based approach and structured learning as defining characteristics of the program, graduates will have the knowledge and skills to demonstrate autonomy, authoritative judgement, adaptability, and responsiveness to issues of global significance. PMU students will work collaboratively and independently throughout the degree to effectively design transformative processes and communicate future worlds. The MSc will see students advance their skills in service orientation, cognitive flexibility, emotional intelligence, problem solving, critical thinking and people management. Developing a futuristic outlook among students is a core ambition of PMU, this programme nurtures creativity, compassion and social responsibility, value for inclusivity and supports efforts to become impactful citizens with the leadership skills to deliver sustainable futures.

PMU is leading the way with the implementation of the first Master’s program in Futures Studies in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the greater GCC region.
