Design of Double Span Bridge

Project Overview

The ever increasing population density of Al-Khobar Al Shmaliya and Al-Iskan residential area has lead over the years to this traffic intersection being the most notorious stop in this district. Resulting in prolonged traffic cycles and full congestions during traffic peak hours. Our decision to construct a bridge in this intersection has come after the exhaustion of many solutions and trials that took place by the municipality. This traffic intersection had its traffic cycles optimized multiple times over the years, paralleled with the addition of (Saher) speed traps. Moreover, the existing upgrade that took place over the 30th St. stopped at this intersection with no further developments.

The proposed bridge is set to include a 2-way bridge. With 2 lanes in each direction in addition to left and right shoulders for each direction. The two directions are separated by double concrete barrier and a sufficient space between them that could serve in the future as a site for speed traps or to accommodate electrical facilities and lines that need to continue along this highway length. More details on the lane dimensions are presented in the upcoming chapter. The bridge incorporates concrete parapet/ barrier, whose dimensions are standardized and can be commercially found with the same dimensions. The gride lines were established at the midpoint of supports and aid in the process of calculating distances and serve as datum references throughout the design procedure. Span length and road width are essential components when it comes to calculating the loads imposed on the bridge and as a result they are the first parameters that we will be fixing for our calculations.
