Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to encourage faculty members at PMU to enhance their research productivity through the reduction of their required teaching duties according to their rank.


Statement

Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University encourages its faculty members to engage in and allocate more time during the regular semester to research activities in order to achieve their research productivity goals.  In this regard, PMU active researchers or those who have not been so active and are initiating research activities can apply for reduced teaching duties. This policy applies only to those faculty members and researchers whose contracts continue after the summer semester of each academic year. It allows individuals to dedicate themselves proportionally to research during the regular semester along with their teaching duties.

The reduced teaching duties and the required research publications will vary based on different agreements with the faculty according to the following guidelines:

a)    Reduction of 3 Credit Hours per semester, Research should yield 2 journal papers annually. Publications should either be Scopus or ISI (Clarivate Analytics) with Impact factor.

b)    Reduction of 6 Credit Hours per semester, Research should yield 4 journal papers annually. Publications should either be Scopus or ISI (Clarivate Analytics) with Impact factor.

c)    Reduction of 9 Credit Hours per semester, Research should yield 6 journal papers annually. Publications should either be Scopus or ISI (Clarivate Analytics) with Impact factor.

d)    All published papers through this policy must carry the PMU affiliation and should be accepted or published within one year of the start of the reduced teaching duties contract.

In the case of non-accomplishment of the publication responsibility associated with the teaching load reduction, appropriate courses will be added in the teaching duties for the next academic year or a corresponding reduction in salary according to the number of reduced hours and the rank of the faculty.


Procedure
Procedure :

PMU active researchers or those who have the ambition to become active researchers who wish to apply for reduced teaching duties in order to carry out research projects resulting in Scopus and ISI (Clarivate Analytics) research publications must prepare a well-documented proposal indicating the area of research, research methodology, and if possible tentative proposed titles of the journal papers to be produced. They will need to go through the following process:

1.    Obtain pre-approval from their Department Chair and College Dean.

2.    Write a formal request to the Deanship of Graduate Studies and Research attaching all related documents including a proposal for research, collaborators with CV (if any), tentative proposed titles for the papers to be produced (if possible), and initial work or results (if any), etc.

3.    Submit a proof of fulfillment of their research publication requirement as per their contract.

4.    Last day to submit a formal request letter will be last working day before finals of each semester.

5.    The Deanship of Graduate Studies and Research will compile all requests and inform all approved applicants prior to the beginning of the next semester.

6.    A special contract prepared by the Deanship of Graduate Studies and Research will be signed between the Deanship of Graduate Studies and Research and the PMU faculty member to ensure accountability.
