Research Themes
Research at the PMU should be seen in the context of its mission to the Eastern Province and the KSA with emphasis on a strong inter-relationship to the region’s business and industrial sectors and the region’s economic development interests. Research should also be seen in the context of the educational and outreach missions of the university where research projects undertaken and conducted by its faculty and staff will be strongly focused and driven by those missions. In particular, partnerships with the community – the private sector, other academic institutions, and the governmental sector – will be a key part of any research and technology service providing carried out by the research component of the university.
Research will be divided into scientific, applied, natural, business, humanities and social science research. Although there may be increasing funds available for scientific research as the university matures, the initial resources and opportunities will be invested in all research   areas.

 Themes of General Research:

The Center will sponsor academic and action oriented general research on the following
themes:
  1. Environmental assessment;
  2. Human ecology and changes in man-environment interactions;
  3. Human resources development and social changes;
  4. Urban ecosystem changes, economic and industrial development;
  5. Energy and innovative technology development;  
  6. Social business, Islamic banking and financial markets, corporate finance and economic studies.  
The Centre will encourage PMU faculty to focus their research on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with particular emphasis on the Eastern Province. Under these broader research themes, faculties of College of Business, and College of Arts and Sciences will explore their own research goals based on their expertise and needs of social and business organization sponsoring their research. 


Themes of Scientific Research

Scientific research will encompass issues those are of particular interest to the faculty within the various colleges of the university. It will be intended to help in the development and enhancement of the colleges’ educational and training missions. It also is intended to promote faculty professional and academic development, maintain current understanding of their respective areas of academic interest and expertise, and otherwise help in the development and enhancement of academic excellence for their teaching and other professional duties. Over time, various centers of scientific research are expected to evolve as funding and opportunities develop through the specific research activities of the faculty. Initially, however, much of this research is expected to be carried out as a part of Applied Research activities using academic laboratories.


Themes of Applied Research

Applied research will include, at least initially, the areas of Community Design Research and the Information Technology Research.  Each research group will focus on providing research and technology services in their areas of expertise to the community. Specific problem solving would be identified for industry and regional businesses with the following general characteristics:
  1. Short-term problem solving of roughly one-to-six months.
  2. Projects, where possible, would have an education and training component including “capstone” project, internships and paid employment work-study students;

Possible areas of applied research and technology service can be derived from the capabilities and expertise incorporated within the undergraduate engineering and information technology laboratory facilities. Such areas may include:
  1. Characterization of industrial materials, including metals, ceramics, polymers, cements and soils. This would include analysis of:
    1. Chemical characterization, including corrosion resistance and susceptibility.
    2. Structural morphology of industrial materials, including metals, ceramics (cements). and polymers (plastics, composites)
    3. Mechanical issues, including, tensile Strength, compression, and fatigue
    4. Failure analysis of systems, components, and structures or materials.
    5. Systems design and analysis
    6. Computer software development and design
    7. Mechanical system design and analysis
    8. Transportation
    9. Civil infrastructures
    10. Non-destructive analysis (NDE)
    11. Power: production and transmission
    12. Energy issues, including conservation and alternative energy systems such as: Solar, Wind, Thermal, and Environment
    13. Environmental impact assessment studies
    14. Improved manufacturing and industrial processing for sustainable growth
    15. Environmental quality control in manufacturing
